The Feast of the Holy Trinity is the celebration of the revelation of God as One God in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and our response to that revelation. It gives us too the opportunity to meditate on the God we believe in: how we look at Him or figure Him to be. Is God interested in our problems? Is He good and understanding or is He a severe, terrible and merciless judge? Does He always stay up there in Heaven or does He come down to earth to meet people?
The readings help us understand, to a certain extent, who and what our God is: the Christian God is not lonely: He is family. He isn’t a God who threatens/frightens people, not a demanding Supreme Being that makes us tremble in fear and anxiety. He is a Father who looks at His children with tenderness, understands their needs, mistakes and faults and loves them even when they sin.
According to St. Paul, the unity of all the members of the community comes from their being members of the family of God, since through baptism they have all become the children of the same Father, and brothers and sisters of the only Son, and all are inspired by the same Spirit. St. John in the Gospel tells us that the mercy, fidelity and love of God is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…” He is a God who loves humankind to such a degree as to become one of them.
The responsibility of the person who sees the manifestation of the love of God is to respond with a ‘yes’ – we did that at the time of our baptism, and we continue to try to live it every day of our life. Not to accept this love of God means a person has condemned himself/herself to a life of unhappiness.
We aren’t meant to be self-centered and self-absorbed, thinking only of our own needs and working only for our own interests. Just like God, we are meant to live for and with other persons. To become like God, our love must go beyond our immediate inner circle of families and friends, that is, having a love that is more communal and universal.
God is Good!!! All the Time!!! All the Time!!! God is Good!!!
